The Roaring 40s – what an era! Sometimes referred to as the "Jazz era" which includes the fabulous 1930s and even earlier than that. We're talking about the age of Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Glen Miller, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, and of course Frank Sinatra who covered three musical generations. The forties merged with the early fifties, nothing of any consequence changed (musically speaking), although it has to be said that the Big Bands went out of style and people like Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra became stars in their own right. OK guys and dolls, break out the vamp dresses, the spats and the Panama hats, get ready to shimmy like your sister Kate!
